A Brief History Of The College

Karamat Husain Muslim Girls' P.G. College, Lucknow, a Muslim Minority Institution is one of the leading women's colleges of Northern India. The College was established in the year 1912 by Justice Maulvi Syed Karamat Husain, a pioneer of women's education in pre-independent India. He founded the college with the avowed object of advancing the cause of education among the Muslim women, but the portals of the college have always remained open to students belonging to all communities without any distinction of caste and creed.

The college is spread over a vast campus in the heart of the city of Lucknow. It has a huge building with two well maintained Hockey Playgrounds. The college has the privilege of having been adopted by the Sports Authority of India, New Delhi (SAI as a Hockey training centre for girls under its CS Scheme. About 15 to 20 girls selected by the SAL are imparted Hockey training by a qualified coach. They are also awarded a monthly stipend and other facilities in the shape of kits etc. by the SAI as a part of its scheme to develop the game of Hockey in the country. A new double storied building houses the canteen on the ground floor and a common room for the students on the first floor. The students enjoy the facility of indoor games in the common room during their free periods. The College has hostel facility for students.

The College has the distinction of achieving B+ in its first accreditation by NAAC. It runs B.A., B.Sc. & B.Com. in all streams and M.A. in English Literature. All under graduate courses are now following the semester system w.e.f. 2018-19 as per the directives of the Vice Chancellor, University of Lucknow. The College has the distinction of running a B.Ed. course with a quota of 50% seats for minority girls. The B.Sc., B.Ed., B.Com. & M.A. are running under the Self Financing Scheme for which no grant is received from the government. The faculty members in each discipline are qualified and experienced. The Faculty of Science has well equipped laboratories. The Language Lab is unique and the first of its kind in any institute of B.Ed. in the city.

In order to encourage excellence amongst the student of the College confers the Governor's Running Trophy and the Nasreen Ahmed Scholarships & Awards to the students of History. The Umme Habiba Memorial Urdu Gold Medal, the Prof. Shamim Nikhat Memorial Gold Medal and Urdu Award & the Nuzhat Kidwai Memorial Urdu Scholarship Award are given for excellence in Urdu. The Laiqun Husain Shafiq Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a meritorious student of B.Ed. Sports Scholarships support out-standing students in indoor and outdoor games.

The College has a state of the art auditorium equipped with central air-conditioning, LED lights, audio system, plush seating arrangement and wall to wall carpeting. It has a capacity to seat 200 people and is most suitable for holding seminars, conference, workshops and various cultural programmes.

Karamat College has the unique distinction of having dignitaries like Mr. Timothy J. Roemer, U.S. Ambassador to India. Mr. David Mees, Cultural Attache, U.S. Embassy, Prof. Walter Russell Mead, U.S. Foreign Policy Analyst, Mr. Walter Douglas, Minister Counselor, Public Affairs. U.S. Embassy, U.S. Filmmaker Maria Finitzo & PROWIBO (Professors Without Borders) who have visited the Campus and have been delighted with their interaction with the students, staff and management.
